Next Sunday, 28th September sees the return of one of Africa’s biggest stars to the London stage. Congolese musician Kanda Bongo Man is one of the pioneers of the modern Soukous sound which inspired the famous ‘kwassa kwassa’ dance wave. The term Soukous actually comes from the French word “secousse” – “to shake” and the sounds in this mix are very much a product of the Parisian 1980’s scene when many Congolese stars moved to France to create fast, short tracks suitable for play on dance floors everywhere. The sound spread through much of Africa, including Cameroon, home of San Fan Thomas (of ‘Africa Tipic Collection’ fame).
It’s sure to be a great night, as the famous saying goes – “If Kanda Bongo Man doesn’t make you want to dance, call an ambulance. You’re dead.”
