Zaire ’74

Zaire ’74

This mix is a Congolese special to coincide with our screening of Soul Power (2008), the first in a series of African music documentaries we’ll be showing at Deptford Cinema, S.E London. The film documents the legendary music concert staged in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), in 1974. The concert was part of a promotional festival for the boxing bout between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, dubbed ‘The Rumble in the Jungle’, but became a historical event in its own right. It featured global stars from the USA such as James Brown and BB King, but also African artists Miriam Makeba, Franco, Manu Dibango and Tabu Ley Rochereau. Details about the screening are here.
